Sam Steinruck 09.MAY.08 It was close to 6 p.m. on a pleasant September evening in Audubon in the early 1950s. The watchman at Merchant St. sat in his yellow-painted cabin on the northeast side of the railroad crossing. He was thinking about the change of the seasons, and that he’d soon be needing to keep a coal fire in the cabin’s potbelly stove. He looked at his Hamilton Railway Special pocket watch, realizing that a commuter train was due shortly. He walked out in front of the cabin and looked along the double-track railroad in the direction of Oaklyn, West Collingswood and Camden.
