Camden County officials announced that engineering problems due to a bad batch of concrete delayed the completion of work on the Newton Creek bridge on W. Park Blvd. in Haddon Township. The bridge had been closed since September and should have been reopened in December. Instead, reopening was scheduled for March.

Hard feelings swirled around the selection committee for the Haddonfield Citizen of the Year Award after the Haddonfield Civic Association excluded its typical representative in favor of the inclusion of the previous two award winners. Still, the Lions Club said the award selection process would remain unbiased.

The Oaklyn Board of Education approved a shared service contract with the Collingswood School District for business office services at a cost of $52,500 annually after Oaklyn’s business administrator submitted her resignation. The contract was expected to save Oaklyn around $40,000 per year.

Collingswood School District expected to save double its original estimate by refinancing $16.2 million in debt. The average yearly savings was expected to amount to $63,000, well above the previous estimate of $35,000, thanks to a strong bond rating from Standard and Poor’s.

Haddon Heights considered entering a pilot program for red light cameras, but members of council and the public were concerned that faulty cameras would lead to tickets for unsuspecting motorists. A representative from American Traffic Solutions countered that red light cameras reduce crashes.

The debate over whether Haddonfield should buy the Bancroft property heated up as the borough announced that it could have additional grant funds to support the purchase at the same time a grassroots effort called Haddonfield United formed to launch a vote no campaign against the referendum.

Collingswood approved a two-year deal to keep police chief Rich Sarlo in his position since the department did not have any captains or lieutenants to move up and succeed the chief. It did have a number of sergeants and a corporal who handled administrative duties, but the CPD needed an administrative reorganization.
