Top Finishers at The Bubble
Schools might’ve been closed for winter break but high school track teams traveled to Toms River to compete in South Jersey Track Coaches Association winter meets. The results included first-place performances by the Audubon, Haddonfield Memorial, and Paul VI indoor track teams.
High school boys basketball teams stayed active over the holiday break by participating in holiday tournaments with several schools from The Retrospect
coverage area hosting events.
Haddonfield High has always fielded a competitive wrestling program but last year, the Bulldogs took it to another level, winning their first-ever sectional title. Not only did Haddonfield win, but it came against Colonial Conference rival West Deptford. The Bulldogs beat West Deptford, 33-28 to win the South Jersey Group 2 championship.
Even as she was just beginning to play soccer, Paul VI senior Sophia Miller realized that defense was her calling. She began playing 9-v-9 and eventually at 11-v-11, but she was always a defender and one who produced impressive results throughout her career.
Girls Basketball News
Many of The Retrospect area high school basketball teams are playing in holiday tournaments this week. The schedule also included several games last Thursday, just before winter break.
By the time the 2023-24 women’s college basketball season ends, Notre Dame freshman Hannah Hidalgo (Paul VI) might set a record for the number of awards collected by a single player. On Tuesday, she was named the AP National Player of the Week.
Most of the high school girls and boys basketball teams in The Retrospect area will be busy competing in holiday tournaments. Not all tournaments are constructed the same way. Some have actual champions, while others just have pre-determined opponents. Paul VI’s girls teams wasn’t scheduled to compete in holiday tournaments. Here are the teams competing locally during the holidays.
Tuesday was an extremely busy day on the South Jersey high school girls basketball scene. Here is a recap of how teams from The Retrospect coverage area fared in their respective games: The Audubon Green Wave girls basketball team improved to 3-0 following a 31-24 victory versus Gateway. Sophomore Emma Speyerer led the offense with 13 points.
