Winning individual awards is nothing new for Hannah Hidalgo, but the latest is a big one - the 2023 USA Basketball 5-on-5 Female Athlete of the Year. The news was announced last week via the USA Basketball website.
Paul VI graduate Brian Leary enjoyed a long successful football career, first as a player and then as a coach. A member of the class of 1987, Leary was a two-year starting quarterback in high school for the Eagles. He then became a four-year starting QB at William Paterson and is in the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Here is a look at the latest news and notes regarding local athletes currently competing on the collegiate level: Freshman swimmer Lilliana Kuball (Haddonfield Memorial) is making immediate contributions to The College of New Jersey women’s swimming and diving. Those contributions have not gone unnoticed as Kuball was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference’s Rookie of the Week.
Flacco Starts for Browns
It has been a busy offseason for Haddon Height senior shortstop Jake Griess. Earlier in the fall, Griess made a college commitment to Division I Wagner. Then, over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, Griess was honored as a member of the Hot Stovers Baseball Club of South Jersey’s All-South Jersey team.
Joe Flacco is back in the AFC North, just wearing a different uniform this time around. The Cleveland Browns signed the veteran NFL quarterback to their practice squad days before Thanksgiving. The team needed to add QB depth as a result of starter Deshaun Watson having season-ending shoulder surgery.
Thanksgiving football continues to fade in much of South Jersey, due largely to the expanded football format. The regular season, minus Thanksgiving games, ended this year the weekend of Oct. 21, with the playoffs beginning the last week of October.
Audubon, Paul VI Represented at Foot Locker Regionals
The Foot Locker Northeast Regionals were held at Franklin Park in Boston last weekend. The top finishers from the high school cross country event earned a trip to San Diego for the Foot Locker Nationals.
Haddonfield Sweeps SJTCA Top Team Honors
Paul VI grad Hannah Hidalgo has wasted little time getting acclimated to the Division I women’s college basketball scene. In Saturday’s 79-68 victory over Illinois, the freshman guard, who calls Haddonfield home, was one of two Notre Dame players to finish with a team-high 24 points. She also chipped in five rebounds, eight assists, and six steals.
